Aune A17 - Headphone amplifier
The Aune A17 is a flagship among fully discrete Class A headphone amplifiers, and it works equally well as a preamplifier. Thanks to its separate power supply, precision volume control, and substantial power reserves, it drives everything from sensitive in-ear headphones to the most demanding over-ear models, with stable operation even during long listening sessions.
The input stage is built around twin-JFET transistors that contribute a natural, warm character reminiscent of tube amplifiers. Two current modes and four gain stages, combined with a 99-step R2R volume control (JRC MUSES72323), let you fine-tune the drive precisely to suit your headphones. The output stage uses three pairs of power transistors in parallel per channel, lowering the output impedance and improving both transient response and bass control.
The power supply is divided into high- and low-voltage sections: the preamp is supplied with ±20 V for ample dynamic headroom, while the power amp runs at ±15 V for better thermal balance. The analog section is powered by a 100 W toroidal transformer with an 80,000 µF capacitor bank, while the digital control has its own dedicated power supply with digital isolators that shield it from interference. Everything is housed in a sturdy aluminum chassis with multi-layer heatsinks for even heat dissipation.
On the connection side, you will find 4-pin XLR, 6.35 mm and 4.4 mm headphone outputs, as well as RCA and XLR inputs and outputs, making the A17 equally suitable as a dedicated headphone amplifier or as a preamplifier in a speaker system. All functions are controlled with dedicated buttons and mirrored on the included aluminum remote control.
